Cargo turnover in eastern Baltic Sea ports: Transshipment down 11% yoy in Klaipeda port

November 3, 2023

The cargo turnover dropped by by 11% year-on-year to 24.1 million t in the port of Klaipeda in the period from January 1 to September 30. The plunge is due to sanctions and reduced transshipment of mineral fertilizers. However, the decrease was partially offset by brisker handling of grain, construction cargo and LNG.

The slowdown in the cargo turnover was also reported in other ports of the Baltic region such as the port of Riga (down 19% to 14.1 million t), Tallinn (down 31% to 9.5 million t), Ventspils (down 21% to 8.3 million t), Liepaja SEZ (down 8% to 5.2 million t), etc.
