On November 17, the LNG tanker GasLog Houston arrived at the Klaipėda LNG terminal (operated by the Lithuanian company KN Energies) from the United States (from Louisiana, departed on October 20). 160,000 cubic meters of liquefied gas will be pumped into the tanks of the Independence floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU). After regasification, part of this cargo will be sent to Ukraine via pipelines and international interconnectors.
Lithuanian Energy Minister Žygimantas Vaičiūnas commented on this event as follows:
“Following Russia’s brutal attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, Lithuania responded quickly – LNG cargoes are already on their way to Ukraine. The Klaipėda LNG terminal is one of the busiest and most used in Europe, but it also provides an opportunity to help Ukraine – through it, we can help ensure gas supplies (…) for our partners. This is a concrete example of our solidarity and transatlantic cooperation. Together, we are looking for ways to ensure reliable gas supplies to Ukraine during the coming winter, making full use of Lithuania’s infrastructure.”
The gas was delivered on behalf of DTEK Group subsidiary D.TRADING International SA, a new customer of the Klaipėda LNG terminal. The company was able to import and regasify approximately 1 TWh of natural gas after booking spot regasification capacities allocated to KN Energies.
“American LNG is key to the energy independence of Ukraine and Europe. This latest shipment reflects DTEK’s vision of being an energy bridge connecting American producers and a region that is gradually moving away from its dependence on Russian gas. From terminals on the Baltic and Mediterranean Seas, we are working with Lithuania and American partners to develop cost-effective routes to increase gas supplies to Ukraine and neighboring countries,” said DTEK CEO Maxim Timchenko.
The new northern LNG corridor through Lithuania provides an additional entry point for gas flows to Ukraine via Poland and the Baltic states. It complements the existing southern D.TRADING route through Greece, which the company already used to transport American gas earlier this year.
In 2025, a total of 30 standard-sized LNG shipments arrived at the Klaipėda terminal, and 23.9 TWh of gas was regasified. The majority of the gas – 71% – was delivered by tankers from natural gas liquefaction plants in the United States, with the rest coming to Lithuania from Norway, Mauritania, Senegal, and Trinidad and Tobago.
