Since January 10, the international operator of energy terminals SC Klaipėdos nafta has been operating under the new legal name SC KN Energies, which reflects strategic changes in the company (the long-term strategy was approved in the summer of 2023) and focus on international markets.

The cargo turnover dropped by 230,000 t to 3.4 million t at the Port of Klaipeda in December compared with November. In particular, Klaipeda State Seaport reports a 132,000 t plunge in December transshipment volume to 2.7 million t. Handling of crude oil dropped by 98,000 t to 692,000 t at the Butinge terminal.
The small-tonnage freight market remains under pressure, which, however, is quite expected: in the last 10 years, ship owners managed to prevent the rate decline in January-February only in 2021. Despite the return of all players from holidays, the market activity remains low; this applies even to shipments of Ukrainian grain.
Romanian steelmaker LIBERTY Galati (a subsidiary of the UK-based LIBERTY Steel Group) plans to modernize its Romportmet Galati port to increase its throughput capacity.

Activity remains minimal on the small-tonnage freight market, which is quite traditional for the very beginning of January. Thus, the 1H-mid January tonnage list is gradually growing in the Black and Mediterranean Seas, with only Ukrainian grains being relatively actively offered among all the cargoes.
