Brazilian corn prices have inched up despite the start of harvesting of the first crop in MY 2023-24. According to Conab, as of December 30, farmers processed 0.9% of the planned areas (0.2% as of the same date last year).

U.S. wheat export quotes have dropped, so demand has increased.
Handling at Ukraine – Hungary border crossings*
A total of 1.1 million t of cargo were transferred through the Chop – Zahony land border crossing point in 2023, of which 108,200 t fell on imported goods while 1 million t were export cargo. Thus, the cargo flow increased bylmost 400,000 t in 2023 compared with 2022 or 56% year-on-year.
Three-day strike in Germany: rail freight traffic suspended
The German Locomotive Drivers’ Union (GDL) announced in a statement that DB Cargo employees would suspend work from the evening of January 9 to the evening of January 12 to go on strike. Passenger traffic operators Deutsche Bahn AG, Transdev and City Bahn Chemnitz have also joined the action (from January 10 to 12).

Increase in container transportation and other foreign trade trends
According to the Ministry of Economy of Ukraine, the overall export volume of goods in containers increased in 2023, showing a 86% hike in rail deliveries and a 36% rise in those by road. Note that container transportation is the most effective in terms of goods with a high added value.

Trade has perked up in the Black Sea region in early January, driven by demand from Turkey and India. Offers are voiced at $865-870/t CIF Mersin and $860/t CIF Izmir with fast shipments, but bids do not exceed $850/t CIF Mersin.

The Australian grain export market looks dull after the holiday break. In the December report, the Grain Industry Association of Western Australia Inc (GIWA) lowered the forecast of winter grain production in Western Australia to 14.28 million t (vs. the November estimate of 14.51 million t).
