Ban on coal concentrate transportation to Slovakia for U.S. Steel Kosice
Starting from April 11 and until the decision is revoked, the supplier Svyato-Varvarinska Enrichment Plant LLC will be banned from transporting coal concentrate (UTSNG 161043) via the Uzhhorod-Exp border crossing to the Haniska pri Kosiciach station in Slovakia for the consignee U.S. Steel Kosice.
Handling at Ukraine-Slovakia border crossings*
About 302 wagons (four trains) were transferred daily through the Chop – Čierna nad Tisou land border crossing in the period from April 1 till April 6. A total of 3,421 wagons were reportedly waiting at the Chop station on April 6.

In Western Europe, quotes for imported thermal coal have been increasing for the third consecutive week, but consumption is not growing in the region and deals are sporadic.
Riga Freeport cargo turnover in February
The Freeport of Riga stepped up the total cargo turnover by 27,000 t to 1.8 million t in February 2023 compared with January 2023.
DB Cargo has transported 3 mmt coal since October 2022
Following the commissioning of backup coal-fired power plants in the fall of 2022, DB Cargo has transported 3 million t of coal (the company estimates that the daily volume is about 30,000 t) for 15 companies in Germany.
Handling at Ukraine-Slovakia border crossings*
About 286 wagons (four trains) were transferred daily through the Chop – Čierna nad Tisou border crossing in the period from March 1 to March 16. Approximately 4,000 wagons were waiting to be handled at the Chop station as of March 16.
Ventspils Freeport cargo turnover in February
The Freeport of Ventspils handled about 826,000 t of cargo in February 2023 (down overwhelming 751,000 t from January 2023). Note that the February 2023 cargo turnover appeared to be the lowest since October 2021.

Quotes for imported thermal coal keep sliding down in West Europe, suffering pressure from favorable weather in regional countries, high stocks in ARA ports and the ongoing decline in gas prices (which are at the lowest levels over the past 1.5 years).

Coal prices continue to decline rapidly in Western Europe due to insufficient consumer demand. Winters are warm in the region, so pace of trade is moderate, with no spot deals reported.
