Similar to several consecutive weeks, the West European market for imported thermal coal continues showing moderate activity amid rising prices. At the same time, demand for Kazakh high-calorie coal is growing in Poland.
Approximately 9,500 wagons with various goods were found waiting for a transfer through Ukraine’s western land border crossing points on September 20 compared with 8,800 wagons in late August.
About 336 wagons were transferred daily through the Chop – Čierna nad Tisou land border crossing point in the period from of September 1 to September 14 (down 4 wagons compared with September 1-7).
A total of 94.9 million tonnes of goods of various product groups were transported in the Ukrzaliznytsia rail network during the period from January 1 to August 31, 2023, which is 10.5% below the same period of 2022.
Quotes for imported thermal coal have stayed nearly unchanged on the West European market, but their range has narrowed. European consumers are quite actively ordering coal with October and November shipments, which supports prices.

The turnover of various types of cargo increased by 174,000 t to 808,000 t at Ventspils Free Port in August compared with July.
Quotes for imported coal have inched down in Western Europe as consumers are still trying to lower prices a bit. At the same time, players note demand in Europe. Signed deals have been reported, including from utility companies.
The operator PKP Cargo S.A. has won a tender for the transportation of 16 million tons of coal and 2 million tons of limestone for the companies belonging to the PGE Group (Polska Grupa Energetyczna S.A.) – PGE Górnictwo, Energetyka Conventional and PGE Energia Ciepła.
