Approximately 10,000 wagons with various goods were found waiting for a transfer through Ukraine’s western land border crossing points on October 11 compared with about 11,000 wagons in late September.
About 2,950 wagons were moving to the Izov station on October 11, including 938 wagons with cakes, 893 wagons with vegetable oil, and 246 wagons with grain. Up to 1,900 wagons were on their way to the Mostyska-2 station on that date, including 976 containers and 418 wagons with metals.
Quotes for imported thermal coal have inched up in Western Europe, although players do not see any trade upturn. No deals have been signed over the week.
The Ventspils Freeport reported a 324,000 t increase in the September turnover of all cargoes to 1.1 million t, showing a 40% surge month-on-month. The growth was seen in all groups of cargoes.
The cargo turnover surged by 30% month-on-month at the Freeport of Riga in September compared with August.
In early October, the offer of imported thermal coal was limited on the West European market, but this fact has failed to support the corresponding quotes. Importers’ demand is moderate. Players have reported a number of signed deals for high-calorie coal, but without any contract details so far.
TAURON Wytwarzanie has signed a contract for the delivery of coal by rail from the suppliers’ sidings to the Nowe Jaworzno power plant. The service will be provided by PKP CARGO for 18 months. The contract is worth about $2.6 million.
A total of 107 million tonnes of goods of various product groups were transported in the Ukrzaliznytsia rail network during the period started January 1 and ended September 30, 2023, down 9% compared with the same period of the previous year.

DTEK has delivered the first 70 wagons (a total of 4,200 t) of coal from Poland to one of its TPPs. A total of 210,000 t of coal have been acquired with the supply in the period from September 2023 to March 2024.
