Cargo turnover increased by 444,000 t to 1.8 million t at the Freeport of Riga in December compared with November. This is mainly due to improved handling of dry bulk cargo (up 244,000 t to 977,000 t) and general cargo (up 207,000 t to 757,000 t).
The cargo turnover dropped by 230,000 t to 3.4 million t at the Port of Klaipeda in December compared with November. In particular, Klaipeda State Seaport reports a 132,000 t plunge in December transshipment volume to 2.7 million t. Handling of crude oil dropped by 98,000 t to 692,000 t at the Butinge terminal.
Starting January 8, METRANS Group (a subsidiary of Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG) will launch a new daily train service between Germany’s largest seaport, Hamburg, and the railway junction in Kornwestheim (near Stuttgart).
The transport company Ambrogio Intermodal has announced an investment in intermodal equipment – swap bodies and container chassis – to be supplied by German Kässbohrer. The new fleet (650 units) will expand the company’s capabilities and facilitate the transition to sustainable logistics.
At the end of December, a transshipment record was broken on the Baltic Hub railway line, with 8,201 containers handled in a week. The average figure in 2023 was 6,500 containers per week.
Lithuanian company LTG Cargo (Lietuvos Geležinkeliai) has announced the strengthening of intermodal services between Kaunas and Duisburg, Pruszkow and Slavków with the participation of LTG Cargo Polska, which has 31 locomotives at its disposal.
According to the Ministry of Economy of Ukraine, the overall export volume of goods in containers increased in 2023, showing a 86% hike in rail deliveries and a 36% rise in those by road. Note that container transportation is the most effective in terms of goods with a high added value.
About 266 wagons were transferred daily through the Chop – Čierna nad Tisou land border crossing point as of December 21 (up 9 units per day in two weeks). Approximately 199 wagons per day were moving on export routes (down 1 unit), while 67 wagons arrived with imported cargo (up 10 units).
On January 3, German intermodal transport company Kombiverkehr KG launches a regular route between the Lübeck Dänischburg CTL terminal and the Swedish cities of Hallsberg and Stockholm. The connection will be provided by rail and ferry.
Adif, a railway infrastructure operator, has announced the start of repairing the railway infrastructure at its La Negrilla cargo terminal in Spain.
